Eric Buschbacher On Training Your Cavapoo Puppy
Raise the perfect puppy with Eric Buschbacher training guide.
Bringing home your new Cavapoo puppy is an exciting time. However, it can also be stressful because your new friend has not yet learned their manners! Puppies are full of energy, and they need a lot of attention. Training a puppy takes time and patience, but with Eric Buschbacher’s training guide, you’ll have your Cavapoo trained in no time!
The Cavapoo breed’s athletic ability, charming personality, and intelligence result from the crossbreed between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle. According to Eric Buschbacher, the Cavapoo also goes by Cavoodle, Cavadoo, Cavadoodle, Cavipoo, and Cavapoodle.
Eric Buschbacher stresses the importance of setting a proper schedule and sticking to it. The puppy should wake up, eat, and sleep at the same time each day. Puppies grow exceptionally quickly and need to be fed at least three times per day. Puppies also have tiny bladders, which means they need to go outside every two to four hours.
Just like babies, puppies don’t know the difference between right or wrong behavior. It is up to the owner to show them what they can and can’t do. For example, if your puppy isn’t allowed on furniture, your Cavapoo needs to be consistently shown that. Eric Buschbacher explains that if you were initially training your puppy to stay off furniture, allowing them on furniture sometimes can cause confusion. If you give your Cavapoo mixed messaging when it comes to the rules, it will be difficult for the puppy to adhere to them.
Eric Buschbacher stresses the importance of reinforcing good behavior with praise. If your puppy does what you ask them to do, reinforce this good behavior with a “good boy”. Simple positive reinforcement through voice goes very far when training puppies. Eric Buschbacher notes that a reward system can also be used as a form of positive reinforcement for a puppy. If your puppy does something you don’t like, don’t reward them. If your puppy listens to your command, reward them with a treat. Eric Buschbacher notes that It is vital for consequences to immediately follow the behavior you are trying to reinforce or put to a stop.
When puppies are young, they tend to bite hands and feet playfully. Your puppy will need to learn that it is not ok to bite in any manner. Biting in a playful way can become a habit that will stay with your Cavapoo through adulthood. Eric Buschbacher explains that adult dogs who playfully bite may accidentally cause injuries or scare other people.
Puppies also need a lot of things to chew. Their chew things need to be designated as toys. Eric Buschbacher explains that as an owner, you should leave out a lot of toys so that the puppy doesn’t have the urge to bite you or your furniture.
Lastly, puppies need to be taught good manners. When guests arrive at your home, teach your puppy to sit instead of jumping on people. If you have trouble with your puppy jumping, try using a leash to keep him calm and sitting. Also, barking needs to be reinforced with a firm “no” when it is not appropriate.
Eric Buschbacher offers one last piece of advice for every new Cavapoo owner, and that is to be patient and go slow. Puppies need to feel comfortable to get the most out of their training.
